Broussard, Fontenot Named Academic All-Americans
Amelia Broussard and Amanda Fontenot scored plenty of points during their time as Lady Bengals. But what you couldn’t see while they were performing on the court, was the time they spent on their studies off of it.

On Friday, the National Junior College Athletic Association named this year’s crop of Academic All-Americans. Broussard and Fontenot were both honored as Distinguished Academic All-Americans. To be selected, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or higher with 45 or more credits earned.

Broussard, a guard for the Lady Bengals, compiled a 3.84 grade-point average during her time at LSU Eunice. This is the second time she has been named an Academic All-American, which is rare for an NJCAA athlete. The requirement for 45 credit hours usually keeps freshman from being selected, but Broussard took on larger workloads, as well as credits she earned during her high school career. She is the only LSU Eunice Basketball player to have been named a two-time Academic All-American.

Fontenot, also a guard, finished her LSU Eunice career with a 3.96 GPA. Although she missed some time in both seasons due to injury, Fontenot was the starting point guard in all but one game she played in. She led the nation in 2009-10 with 8.04 assists per game, and compiled a total of 357 assists over her two years, good for second in Lady Bengal history.

Both players graduated from LSU Eunice with honors in May, and have both transferred to LSU Shreveport to continue their academic and athletic pursuits.
