The LSU Eunice Lady Bengal Basketball team has finished its regular season, and is now playoffs bound. They will be heading to El Reno, Oklahoma to begin their quest towards the national championship. But before they leave, here is everything you should know before the games begin.
To determine the national champion in basketball, the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has divided the country into 24 different regions to separate their member schools. At the end of each season, all of the schools in each region begin a playoff to determine a champion of the division.
LSU Eunice is in Region 23, which consists of all schools in Louisiana and Mississippi. However, they are the only school in the region with Division II basketball. By rule, instead of a playoff, the Lady Bengals as the only team in the region have to have a record above .500, 10 days before the start of the District playoffs. At 16-10 on February 23rd, they completed that goal, and are considered Region 23 champions.
The next step on the road to the national tournament is the
District playoffs. The NJCAA has divided the 24 regions into 12 districts, comprised of varying amounts of regions. Each district has it’s own way to determine who will be it’s champion for that season. The winners of district tournaments are then advanced into the national tournament. In LSU Eunice’s case, they are in District B. District B is comprised of regions 2, 5, 6, and 23. In total, there are eight schools in this district.
In the first round, LSU Eunice was seeded against
Redlands Community College of Region 2. The host school will play the first game of the night at 6 PM, while
North Arkansas College and
Clarendon College face off after the conclusion of the first contest. The two winners face off the following day at 3 PM to determine the first finalist in the district. The other finalist will be the champion of the Region 6 playoff, consisting of teams all from Kansas. Those teams are
Johnson County Community College,
Brown Mackie College,
Highland Community College, and
Hesston College. The championship game will be held at Charles Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas on March 8 at 3:30 PM.
